Directions
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease a 23 cm (9-inch) baking dish.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions and garlic until translucent, about 3–4 minutes.
- Add ground meat, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme. Remove from heat.
- In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth and slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared dish. Spread the cooked meat over the potatoes, then top with remaining potatoes.
- Pour the milk mixture evenly over the layers. Sprinkle grated cheese on top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbly, and potatoes are tender.
- Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
