Meat and Potato Casserole

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease a 23 cm (9-inch) baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions and garlic until translucent, about 3–4 minutes.
  3. Add ground meat, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme. Remove from heat.
  4. In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth and slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared dish. Spread the cooked meat over the potatoes, then top with remaining potatoes.
  6. Pour the milk mixture evenly over the layers. Sprinkle grated cheese on top.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbly, and potatoes are tender.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
