Directions
- Lightly dust the chuck steak cubes with seasoned plain flour. Brown the meat in a fry pan with a little oil until golden on all sides. Remove and set aside.
- In another pan, melt the butter and cook the chopped onions and crushed garlic until they are soft and transparent.
- In a slow cooker, combine beef stock, beef stock powder, Italian herbs, tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, and 1 tablespoon of plain flour. Stir to combine.
- Add the browned steak, cooked onions, and garlic to the slow cooker. Cook on high for 5 hours. Towards the end, add 1 tablespoon of onion gravy powder to reach your desired gravy thickness.
- About 45 minutes before serving, prepare the dumplings. In a bowl, rub the butter into the self-raising flour. Add the milk and beaten egg, mixing with a fork until combined.
- Knead the mixture briefly with your hands until it forms a soft dough. Roll small balls about 2 cm (¾ inch) in diameter.
- Submerge the dumplings into the slow cooker under the gravy. Cook for 30–40 minutes until they are fluffy and cooked through.
- Serve the braised steak and onions hot, with dumplings nestled in the rich, savory gravy.
