Braised Steak & Onion with Dumplings

Directions

  1. Lightly dust the chuck steak cubes with seasoned plain flour. Brown the meat in a fry pan with a little oil until golden on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  2. In another pan, melt the butter and cook the chopped onions and crushed garlic until they are soft and transparent.
  3. In a slow cooker, combine beef stock, beef stock powder, Italian herbs, tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, and 1 tablespoon of plain flour. Stir to combine.
  4. Add the browned steak, cooked onions, and garlic to the slow cooker. Cook on high for 5 hours. Towards the end, add 1 tablespoon of onion gravy powder to reach your desired gravy thickness.
  5. About 45 minutes before serving, prepare the dumplings. In a bowl, rub the butter into the self-raising flour. Add the milk and beaten egg, mixing with a fork until combined.
  6. Knead the mixture briefly with your hands until it forms a soft dough. Roll small balls about 2 cm (¾ inch) in diameter.
  7. Submerge the dumplings into the slow cooker under the gravy. Cook for 30–40 minutes until they are fluffy and cooked through.
  8. Serve the braised steak and onions hot, with dumplings nestled in the rich, savory gravy.
