Step 1: Prepare the Steak
Season the thinly sliced steak with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Set aside while you sauté the onions.
Step 2: Sauté the Onions
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 6–8 minutes until soft and caramelized. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Step 3: Cook the Steak
In the same skillet, increase heat to medium-high and add the seasoned steak slices. Cook for 2–3 minutes per side until browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Remove and keep warm.
Step 4: Assemble the Sandwich
Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise. Layer steak, sautéed onions, and cheese evenly on each roll. Close the sandwich.
Step 5: Grill the Sandwich
Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Spread butter on the outside of each roll. Grill the sandwich for 2–3 minutes per side until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese has melted.
Step 6: Serve
Slice the sandwiches in half and serve immediately while warm and melty.
