Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Yeast Mixture
In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy to ensure the yeast is active.
Step 2: Combine Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture, egg, and softened butter. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
Step 3: Knead the Dough
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook on medium speed for about 8 minutes.
Step 4: First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
Step 5: Shape the Dough
Punch down the dough to release air bubbles. Shape it into a loaf or divide into smaller rolls as desired.
Step 6: Second Rise
Place the shaped dough in a greased loaf pan, cover, and let rise for 30–45 minutes, until it has risen just above the edge of the pan.
Step 7: Bake
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
Step 8: Cool and Serve
Cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
