Minced Meat with Gravy over Mashed Potatoes

Directions

Step 1: Prepare the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Place the peeled and quartered potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Add a pinch of salt and bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  3. Drain the water and return the potatoes to the pot. Add the milk and butter, then mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover the pot to keep warm while you prepare the meat.

Step 2: Cook the Minced Meat and Make the Gravy

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and cook the minced beef until fully browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pan and cook for about 5 minutes, until the onions are translucent.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the meat mixture and stir for 2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
  4. Gradually pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly and scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Simmer for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  5. If desired, stir in frozen peas and carrots for added color and nutrients. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 3: Serve

  1. Plate the creamy mashed potatoes and spoon the savory minced meat gravy over the top.
  2. Serve warm and enjoy the comforting flavors with family or friends.

Tips & Variations

  • Make Ahead: Prepare mashed potatoes ahead of time and reheat with a splash of milk to restore creaminess. The meat sauce can be refrigerated for a few days, making this a great make-ahead meal.
  • Healthier Option: Substitute ground turkey for beef or add extra vegetables such as green beans, corn, or mushrooms.
  • Flavor Boost: Sauté mushrooms or bell peppers with the onions for added depth. Mixing sweet potatoes with regular potatoes in the mash adds a subtle sweetness.
