Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 bell pepper (any color), thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4-6 pita breads
- Tzatziki sauce, for serving
- Optional toppings: sliced tomatoes, chopped lettuce, sliced cucumbers, crumbled feta cheese
Instructions:
Prepare the Ingredients:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Season the beef with salt, pepper, oregano, and cumin. Cook until the beef is browned and no longer pink.
Cook the Vegetables:
- To the skillet, add the sliced onions, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Cook with the beef until the vegetables are soft and slightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking.
Warm the Pita Bread:
- While the meat and vegetables are cooking, warm the pita breads in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-10 minutes, or lightly toast them in a dry skillet over medium heat for a minute on each side until warm and pliable.
Assemble the Gyros:
- Lay each pita bread on a flat surface. Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce over each pita.
- Spoon the hamburger, pepper, and onion mixture down the center of each pita.
- Add any optional toppings like sliced tomatoes, chopped lettuce, sliced cucumbers, or crumbled feta cheese.
Fold and Serve:
- Fold the pita over the filling or roll it up like a wrap.
- Serve immediately while everything is still warm.
Tips:
- Beef Alternative: You can substitute ground lamb, turkey, or chicken for the beef if you prefer.
- Homemade Tzatziki: Make your own tzatziki sauce by combining grated cucumber (drained of excess water), Greek yogurt, minced garlic, a splash of olive oil, lemon juice, and dill.
