Hamburger, Pepper, and Onion Gyros

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper (any color), thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4-6 pita breads
  • Tzatziki sauce, for serving
  • Optional toppings: sliced tomatoes, chopped lettuce, sliced cucumbers, crumbled feta cheese

Instructions:

Prepare the Ingredients:
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
  • Season the beef with salt, pepper, oregano, and cumin. Cook until the beef is browned and no longer pink.

Cook the Vegetables:

  • To the skillet, add the sliced onions, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Cook with the beef until the vegetables are soft and slightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking.

Warm the Pita Bread:

  • While the meat and vegetables are cooking, warm the pita breads in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-10 minutes, or lightly toast them in a dry skillet over medium heat for a minute on each side until warm and pliable.

Assemble the Gyros:

  • Lay each pita bread on a flat surface. Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce over each pita.
  • Spoon the hamburger, pepper, and onion mixture down the center of each pita.
  • Add any optional toppings like sliced tomatoes, chopped lettuce, sliced cucumbers, or crumbled feta cheese.

Fold and Serve:

  • Fold the pita over the filling or roll it up like a wrap.
  • Serve immediately while everything is still warm.

Tips:

  • Beef Alternative: You can substitute ground lamb, turkey, or chicken for the beef if you prefer.
  • Homemade Tzatziki: Make your own tzatziki sauce by combining grated cucumber (drained of excess water), Greek yogurt, minced garlic, a splash of olive oil, lemon juice, and dill.
