Directions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with a pinch of sugar. Let sit 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, vanilla, softened butter, and the yeast mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 8–10 minutes.
  4. Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape into a round or oval loaf. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  7. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle sugar on top if desired.
  8. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  9. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
