Directions
- Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5 minutes until translucent and soft. Add the minced garlic and cook 1–2 more minutes, until fragrant.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Stir well to combine. Add tomato paste if using, for extra depth and richness.
- Stir in the dried basil, oregano, sugar, salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes. Taste and adjust seasoning.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer partially covered for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. For a deeper flavor, simmer for up to an hour.
- Add fresh parsley and thyme during the last 5 minutes of cooking for a bright, fresh flavor.
- Optional: For a smooth sauce, blend with an immersion blender or in a regular blender. For a chunkier sauce, leave as is.
- Serve over cooked pasta, meatballs, or as a base for lasagna. Garnish with fresh basil or grated Parmesan for extra flavor.
