Creamy Chicken & Bacon Carbonara Braid with Mozzarella

Directions

Step 1: Cook the Bacon

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy and golden. The kitchen will fill with a smoky aroma. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside on paper towels, leaving a small amount of bacon fat in the pan.

Step 2: Sauté the Garlic and Chicken

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir in the diced cooked chicken and warm it through for 2–3 minutes, letting it absorb the garlicky flavor.

Step 3: Make the Creamy Carbonara Filling

Lower the heat. In a bowl, whisk together the cream, egg, Parmesan cheese, black pepper, and a small pinch of salt. Slowly pour this mixture into the skillet, stirring gently. Cook for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened, then fold in the crispy bacon. Remove from heat and allow the filling to cool slightly.

Step 4: Prepare the Dough

Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough out into a large rectangle on the prepared baking sheet. Using a knife, lightly mark the center third of the dough lengthwise (this is where the filling will go).

Step 5: Add the Filling and Cheese

Spread the cooled chicken and bacon carbonara mixture evenly down the center section. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella generously over the filling for that irresistible cheesy pull.

Step 6: Create the Braid

Cut diagonal strips along both sides of the dough, about 2.5 cm (1 inch) wide. Fold the strips alternately over the filling, crossing them to form a braid. Gently press the ends to seal.

Step 7: Brush and Bake

Brush the dough with the egg yolk and milk mixture to give it a glossy, golden finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until the braid is puffed and beautifully golden brown.

Step 8: Rest and Garnish

Remove from the oven and let the braid rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. Sprinkle with fresh parsley for a pop of color and freshness.
