- 3–4 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks
- 2–3 potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 2 cups beef broth (480 ml)
- 1 cup red wine (240 ml, optional)
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper, to taste
