2. A Dress Made of Memories
Prom season arrived while Nicole was still grieving. While other students talked about expensive designer dresses, she felt disconnected from the excitement. Prom had always been something she imagined sharing with her father.
One evening, while going through the belongings the hospital had returned, she found Johnny’s old work shirts carefully folded in a box. At that moment, an idea came to her: if her father couldn’t attend prom with her, she could carry him with her.
With the help of her aunt, Nicole began sewing a dress from those shirts. She learned slowly, making mistakes and starting over more than once. Each piece of fabric held a memory—the shirt Johnny wore on her first day of school, the one he wore when teaching her to ride a bike, and others tied to small but meaningful moments in their lives.
When the dress was finally finished, it wasn’t glamorous or expensive. But it was something far more meaningful—a patchwork of love, memories, and the presence of the father she missed.
