2. The Secret Hidden for 65 Years
The address led Rosa to a row of old storage garages on the outskirts of the city. When she unlocked garage number 122, she discovered a large wooden box covered in dust.
Inside were dozens of letters, children’s drawings, birthday cards, and school certificates. Many of the letters were addressed to Harold and signed by a woman named Virginia.
Old documents revealed that decades earlier Harold had financially supported a young woman and her infant daughter after the child’s father disappeared. For years, he quietly paid their rent, covered school expenses, and sent money to help them survive.
Rosa’s heart sank. For a moment, she feared her husband had been living a secret life.
Just then, the same girl from the funeral appeared at the garage. She introduced herself as Gini and explained that Virginia was her mother.
Gini said Harold had visited them occasionally and had recently given her the envelope to deliver after his death. She also revealed that her mother was in the hospital, needing an expensive heart surgery they couldn’t afford.
Rosa suddenly realized that Harold had known about this situation before he died—and had trusted her to finish what he had started.
