Directions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: Beat the egg with warm milk and softened butter. Add the yeast mixture.
  4. Form the dough: Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture. Mix until a sticky dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. First rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. Shape the loaf: Punch down the dough to release air. Shape into a loaf and place it in a greased 9x5 inch (23x13 cm) loaf pan. Cover and let rise for another 30–40 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  8. Optional brushing: Brush the top of the loaf with beaten egg for a shiny, golden crust.
  9. Bake: Bake for 25–30 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Cool: Remove from the pan and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
