Homemade Pizza Dough

Directions

Proofing the Yeast:

  1. In a bowl, combine sugar, ½ cup warm water, and yeast. Stir to combine.
  2. Let sit for 10 minutes until frothy and slightly earthy smelling. If no bubbles form, try with fresh yeast.

Mixing the Dough:

3. In a separate bowl, mix flour, salt, and Italian seasoning (if using).
4. Add the flour mixture to the yeast mixture along with 3 tablespoons olive oil and the remaining ½ cup warm water.
5. Mix with a stand mixer or food processor with a dough attachment on medium-high speed for 5 minutes until the dough pulls away from the bowl and is stretchy. (See notes if mixing by hand.)

Letting the Dough Rise:

6. Lightly oil a heatproof bowl with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and place in a warm area to rise for 30 minutes.

Stretching the Dough:

7. Sprinkle a light handful of flour on a clean surface and a little on the dough. Gently knead a few times, folding and pressing with the heels of your hands.
8. Roll and stretch the dough to a 12-inch circle. Pinch holes back together or reroll if needed.

Making the Pizza:

9. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Oil a pan or sprinkle cornmeal evenly for a crunchy, nonstick bottom.
10. Stretch dough in the pan, add your favorite toppings, and bake for 10–12 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
