Easy Amish Poor Man’s Steak

Directions

Step 1: Prepare the Steak

Pat the cube steaks dry and season both sides with salt and black pepper. Dredge each steak lightly in flour, shaking off excess.

Step 2: Sear the Steaks

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat vegetable oil or butter. Add the steaks and cook 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove steaks from the skillet and set aside.

Step 3: Cook the Onions

In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Sauté for 5–6 minutes until onions are soft and caramelized, stirring occasionally.

Step 4: Make the Gravy

Sprinkle remaining flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste. Gradually add beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder. Simmer for 3–4 minutes until the gravy thickens slightly.

Step 5: Combine Steak and Gravy

Return the steaks to the skillet, spooning gravy and onions over them. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5–7 minutes, allowing the steaks to absorb the rich flavors of the gravy.

Step 6: Serve

Serve the Poor Man’s Steak hot over mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or rice. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
