Directions
- In a small bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a circle, about 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter.
- Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce over half of each dough circle, leaving a 1-inch (2.5 cm) border. Layer on mozzarella, Parmesan, meats, and vegetables if using.
- Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges firmly to seal, then crimp with a fork.
- Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with dried oregano or Italian seasoning.
- Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes before slicing.
- Serve warm with extra marinara sauce for dipping.
