Classic BBQ Ribs

Directions

Step 1: Prepare the Ribs

Remove the thin membrane from the back of the ribs if it’s still attached. This helps the ribs become more tender and allows the seasoning to penetrate better. Pat the ribs dry with paper towels.

Step 2: Season Generously

In a small bowl, mix salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and brown sugar. Rub the seasoning evenly over both sides of the ribs, pressing it in so it adheres well.

Step 3: Wrap and Rest

Wrap the seasoned ribs tightly in aluminum foil. For best flavor, let them rest in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight. This step helps the spices sink into the meat.

Step 4: Slow Bake

Preheat your oven to 160°C (325°F). Place the wrapped ribs on a baking sheet and bake for 2½ to 3 hours, until the meat is very tender and easily pulls away from the bone.

Step 5: Make the BBQ Sauce

While the ribs cook, combine barbecue sauce, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, and chili powder in a saucepan. Simmer gently over low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened and glossy.

Step 6: Unwrap and Sauce

Carefully remove the ribs from the oven and unwrap them. Transfer them to a clean baking sheet. Brush generously with the prepared BBQ sauce on both sides.

Step 7: Caramelize the Sauce

Increase oven temperature to 220°C (425°F) or switch to the broiler. Return the ribs to the oven uncovered and cook for 10–15 minutes, brushing with more sauce once or twice, until the sauce is sticky and caramelized.

Step 8: Rest Before Serving

Remove the ribs from the oven and let them rest for 5–10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, keeping the meat moist and flavorful.

Step 9: Slice and Serve

Cut between the bones and serve warm with extra BBQ sauce on the side.

Variations & Substitutions

Oven-to-Grill Finish:

Instead of broiling, finish the ribs on a hot grill for 5–10 minutes to add a light smoky char.

Spicy BBQ Ribs:

Add cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the BBQ sauce for a spicier kick.

Sweet & Smoky:

Use maple syrup instead of honey and add a drop of liquid smoke for deeper flavor.

Beef Ribs Option:

This method works well with beef ribs too, but increase cooking time by 30–45 minutes.
