Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks

1.  Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
2.  In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
3.  Mix the ingredients thoroughly, then divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a patty.
4.  Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Set the cooked patties aside.

Step 2: Make the Gravy

1.  In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
2.  Add the sliced onion and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
3.  Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to form a roux. Cook for 1–2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
4.  Slowly whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
5.  Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to taste.

Step 3: Assemble the Dish

1.  In a baking dish, arrange the cooked hamburger patties.
2.  Pour the prepared gravy over the patties, making sure they are generously covered.
3.  Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25-30 minutes, until the patties are heated through and the flavors have melded together.

Tips for Success

Add Veggies: For an extra boost of flavor and nutrition, consider adding sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers to the gravy.
Make It Ahead: You can prepare the patties and gravy in advance, then assemble and bake when you’re ready to serve.
Crispier Patties: If you prefer your hamburger steaks with a bit of a crispy exterior, sear them in the skillet for a few extra minutes before transferring them to the baking dish.
