A few weeks later, one of my apps got sold — and I received a $60,000 bonus.
That brought my total savings to $240,000.
My old college friend Dave, now a real estate agent, called me.
“I found the perfect place,” he said.
“Two-bedroom apartment, downtown. Bright, modern — ideal for remote work.”
He was right. Hardwood floors, huge windows, my own office. Halfway through the tour, I said,
“I’ll take it.”
Within two weeks, the papers were signed. I had the keys — but I didn’t tell my family.
Then my boss offered me a two-week, all-expenses-paid trip to Seattle for a tech conference. The timing was perfect.
When I got back… my belongings were dumped on the lawn.
“While you were gone,” Sandra said smugly, “we made some changes. The kids needed more space, so your old room is now a playroom.”
Mom added,
“We’ve cleaned the basement for you. It’s really not that bad anymore.”
Sandra grinned.
“Or, of course, you can always find your own place. You’re 29, after all.”
I looked at all of them — and smiled.
“You’re absolutely right, Sandra. It’s time I got my own place. But tell me, how are you going to pay the mortgage without my money?”
Marcus puffed his chest.
“I got a new job last week. Good pay.”
“That’s great,” I said calmly. “I’m happy for you.”
Then I called a moving company. Two hours later, I was gone — straight to my beautiful new apartment.
I blocked their numbers and canceled every bill in my name.
For the first time in years, I felt peace.
