Directions
- Heat a medium skillet or cast-iron pan over medium heat and add the olive oil. Once hot, add the okra and diced onion.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3–5 minutes until the okra softens slightly and the onions turn translucent and fragrant.
- Add the minced garlic, sugar, salt, and Creole seasoning if using. Stir well and cook for about 2 minutes until the garlic becomes aromatic but not browned.
- Pour in the apple cider vinegar and stir for about 30 seconds. Most of the sharp vinegar aroma should cook off quickly.
- Add the crushed tomatoes along with their juices and pour in the water. Reduce the heat to medium-low.
- Simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the okra becomes tender.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt if needed. The dish should taste bold and well-seasoned.
- Just before serving, swirl in the butter until it melts into the sauce, adding richness and shine.
