Old-Fashioned Homemade Buttercream Frosting (Marshmallow-Style)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Flour Mixture
In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the milk and flour. Continue whisking constantly until the mixture thickens to a pudding-like consistency.
  2. Cool the Mixture
Remove from heat and let the mixture cool completely to room temperature. For best results, cover with plastic wrap touching the surface to prevent a skin from forming.
  3. Cream the Butter and Sugar
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together using a mixer until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
  4. Add the Flour Mixture
Once the milk mixture has cooled completely, add it gradually to the butter mixture while beating continuously.
  5. Add Flavoring
Mix in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Continue beating for 3–5 minutes until the frosting becomes smooth, fluffy, and marshmallow-like.
  6. Use Immediately
Spread or pipe the frosting onto cakes or cupcakes.
