Classic Tuna Melt

Directions

  1. Prepare the Tuna Salad:
Flake the drained tuna with a fork, especially if using solid white tuna. In a bowl, combine the tuna, mayonnaise, celery, red onion, relish, green onion, parsley, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly. The salad yields about 2 cups, enough for 4 sandwiches. This mixture can be made up to 5 days in advance for easy meal prep.
  2. Butter the Bread:
Lightly spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice. This helps the bread brown evenly and adds flavor. You may also brush melted butter or even spread mayonnaise for a slightly different taste and crispness.
  3. Build the Sandwich:
Place a slice of cheddar cheese on the buttered side of each bread slice. Add sliced tomatoes if desired, then scoop ½ cup of the tuna salad on top. Cap with the second bread slice, buttered side facing out. Layering the cheese on the bottom ensures it melts quickly in contact with the hot pan.
  4. Cook the Sandwich:
Preheat a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium-low heat. Place the sandwich in the pan, cheese-side down. Cover with a lid to trap steam and help melt the cheese. Toast for 2 minutes, checking frequently to avoid burning. Adjust the heat as needed.
  5. Flip and Finish Cooking:
Carefully flip the sandwich, cover again, and toast for an additional 2–3 minutes until the second side is golden brown and crispy. Cheese should be melted and the tuna salad warmed.
  6. Serve Immediately:
Remove the sandwich from the pan, slice in half, and enjoy while warm for the best texture and flavor.
