Chocolate Pie

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dry Ingredients
    In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
  2. Add the Milk
    Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  3. Cook the Filling
    Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook while stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble.
  4. Temper the Egg Yolks
    In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks. Slowly add a few spoonfuls of the hot chocolate mixture to the yolks while whisking to warm them.
  5. Combine the Mixture
    Pour the tempered egg yolks back into the saucepan and cook for another 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly until thick and creamy.
  6. Finish the Filling
    Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth.
  7. Fill the Pie Crust
    Pour the warm chocolate filling into the prepared pie crust and smooth the top.
  8. Chill the Pie
    Cover the surface lightly with plastic wrap (touching the filling to prevent a skin) and refrigerate for at least 3 hours until fully set.
  9. Prepare the Whipped Cream
    In a bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form.
  10. Garnish and Serve
    Spread or pipe the whipped cream on top of the chilled pie and garnish with chocolate shavings if desired. Slice and serve.
