Instructions
- Prepare the Dry Ingredients
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt. - Add the Milk
Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth and well combined. - Cook the Filling
Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook while stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble. - Temper the Egg Yolks
In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks. Slowly add a few spoonfuls of the hot chocolate mixture to the yolks while whisking to warm them. - Combine the Mixture
Pour the tempered egg yolks back into the saucepan and cook for another 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly until thick and creamy. - Finish the Filling
Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth. - Fill the Pie Crust
Pour the warm chocolate filling into the prepared pie crust and smooth the top. - Chill the Pie
Cover the surface lightly with plastic wrap (touching the filling to prevent a skin) and refrigerate for at least 3 hours until fully set. - Prepare the Whipped Cream
In a bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form. - Garnish and Serve
Spread or pipe the whipped cream on top of the chilled pie and garnish with chocolate shavings if desired. Slice and serve.
