A Cop’s Worst Nightmare: Arresting the Wrong Person

Callaway uncuffed her immediately.

The street was silent.

Simone looked at him.

“You think your badge gives you the right to stop anyone?” she said.

He said nothing.

“You chose me because I looked like I didn’t belong,” she continued. “That’s all it took.”

Callaway stayed silent.

“You put your hands on me. You humiliated me.”

Her voice lowered. “How many others?”

He had no answer.

Briggs stepped in.

“You are relieved of duty. Hand over your badge and weapon.”

Callaway complied.


Later, Callaway sat in his car.

Badge gone. Gun gone. Career uncertain.

He watched the street.

He saw Simone speaking with Briggs.

He saw people still recording.

And for the first time, Callaway understood something uncomfortable:

He had not just made a mistake.
