  • 12 oz (340 g) spaghetti pasta
  • 1 tablespoon salt (for boiling water)

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (30 ml)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (about 100 g / 3.5 oz)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced (about 9 g)
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (28 oz / 800 g)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste (30 g / 1 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano (1 g)
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil (1 g)
  • ½ teaspoon salt (3 g)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper (1 g)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • ½ cup water or beef broth (120 ml)

For Serving

  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (50 g / 1.8 oz)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley or basil, chopped (8 g)
