Instructions
- Preheat oven. Set oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
- Mix dry ingredients. In a medium bowl, whisk together whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Combine wet ingredients. In a large bowl, mix applesauce, honey or maple syrup, melted coconut oil, almond milk, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Combine wet and dry. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, whisking until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the cake tender.
- Pour batter. Transfer the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread evenly.
- Bake. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve. Enjoy as is or top with a healthier frosting like Greek yogurt frosting or avocado chocolate frosting for an extra touch.
